On today’s episode of @bendy_bodies, I spoke with Dr. Dacre Knight of UVA Health about how medicine often defines severity by immediate mortality risk.
Yes, vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and other rare types can be life-threatening.
But that does not mean hypermobile EDS and HSD are not serious.
These more common forms can cause chronic, multi-system impairment that is less visible, but deeply impactful.
The effects are often long-lasting and can shape someone’s life for decades.
And while hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is not typically classified as life-threatening, serious complications can and do occur.
There are cases of young people experiencing fatal outcomes related to complications of hEDS.
These conditions are very serious.
Early recognition and intervention matter, because without it, complications can build and become increasingly difficult to manage.
💬 Have you ever been told your form of EDS “isn’t that serious”?
