🧠 How can clinicians tell the difference between a primary psychiatric disorder and symptoms driven by mast cell activation or inflammation?

According to psychiatrist Dr. Janet Settle, you often can’t—because they can look exactly the same.

In today's episode of @bendy_bodies, Dr. Settle explains why it’s critical for mental health providers to keep mast cell mediators and histamine on their internal differential when assessing patients with psychiatric symptoms.

While some patients show obvious signs—like hives, interstitial cystitis, or anaphylaxis—others may not, and their symptoms are still mast cell–driven.

That’s why Dr. Settle encourages clinicians to start asking more questions and, under proper supervision, consider trials of mast cell–targeted treatments like antihistamines or ketotifen.

đź’¬ Question for you: Do your psychiatric symptoms tend to flare with your physical ones?
